Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician. Born October 20, 1964, she is the 49th Vice President of the United States. She is the first female vice-president and the highest ranking female official in U.S history. Harris is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. Additionally, she served as a United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Following her first job as an Alameda County District Attorney, Harris was recruited to San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In the following years, she was the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003 she was elected as the district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010 Harris was elected Attorney General for California. She was reelected in 2014. Harris was the United States junior senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the 2nd African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. She was a senator , and was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare and federal cannabis de-scheduling. She also advocated for an opportunity to become a citizen for immigrants without a legal status as well as the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons, as well as progressive tax reform. Her pointed questioning of Trump officials in Senate hearings has earned her national attention, including the second Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, who was charged with sexual assault.
